BD Northern Region Committee

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all the Northern Region Committee!

There is plenty to look forward to in 2018 with two additional major BD Events, the Judges' Convention (17 April) and the Senior Home International (31 Aug - 2 Sept) being held at Bishop Burton Arena.

We will also be holding a Northern Show on 23 - 24 June at Port Royal EEC. This is the first weekend of winter qualification so we will have classes for everyone up to Grand Prix, including BD Youth, PARA Qualifiers and Quest, and there will also be Judge and Steward Training.

Riders will compete in classes and sections as a regular BD show with points and rosettes as usual. If you are a resident Northern competitor and compete in a combination of classes your scores will automatically go forward to the Championship on the day at your level.

In the New Year we will be looking for Northern sponsors for rosettes and sashes. We would also love to have some annual trophies. If you are interested in supporting a level or type of championship or have a trophy to donate in your name or in memory of a loved one, we would love to hear from you. Rosettes and sashes will be personalised with business names. We will advertise and promote sponsors, and any fundraising from the event will help support training in the region.

Perhaps we could also finish 2018 or start 2019 with a Presentation Ball? We will ask for your feedback on this with a Facebook post on 6 January, with a competition to win a flexi-training session with a coach of your choice.

For the 12 days of Christmas we will have a daily treat for you on Facebook via Lucinda Bird, with Alanna Clarke, our BD Youth Vlogger, with clips of her recent experience at Camp.

Finally, a huge thank you to our Venues, Organisers, Judges, Stewards, Volunteers and Sponsors as we look forward to next year which is the 20th Anniversary of British Dressage.

If you read the BD Youth Newsletter click here, you will be aware that after 5 fabulous years Nikki is stepping down as Rep to concentrate on her daughter Jess's dressage career. Thank you Nikki !

We are therefore advertising her role for a BD Youth rep to replace Nikki and for another Senior Training Rep to work with Fiona to focus on our teams and team training. Please see below if you are interested in either role.

Christmas is a great time to get your diary organised for 2018 so you can plan your route to qualification for whatever Championship route you have chosen!

For those of you taking the Area Festival route, remember you can go to more than one first round if you have enough scores. First rounds are now Prelim to Advanced Medium, with PSG and above going direct to the second round. Under 18's are now Under 21's.

Check your dates for your eligibility so you can get out at those early events in May and June. The qualifying period started on 1 October and scores obtained need to be 14 days before the close of entries.

2018 Tests

As you check your test sheets for 2018 remember that Prelim 17 is now replaced by Prelim 17a and Novice 37 by Novice 37a. There are no further additions to test sheets this year.

JUDGE TRAINING

This evening is being held as a fundraising event for Tessa Thorne, a BD List 2 judge who many of you may know, to receive treatment not available in the UK for Multiple Sclerosis.

Jane Peberdy and Sandra Smith have kindly organised this event and as a region we are keen to be involved. Proceeds will go to the fund for Tessa's treatment.

Jane will use a selection of DVD material including short clips in the format of the exam. This will be useful for those working towards exams, for continuous development, and is also open to coaches and riders.

COACHING

We are thrilled to announce a day at Mount St John kindly given to the region by Emma Blundell and her team. Proceeds will help to support our Regional teams in 2018 and is such a lovely way to support Northern Dressage. Thank you Emma!
Our Coaching Representative Charlotte Wilson and Judge Andrea Smith will work with Jayden Brown and MSJ resident riders through the levels. One not to be missed!

At the moment the two Level 3 courses are in Hampshire and the West Midlands. There is a Level 2 Course at Vale View EC. If any Northern members are looking at Level 3 and would be interested in a venue further north, please email me as we require sufficient numbers to do so.

PARA


The PARA Home International will be held at Vale View Equestrian Centre 27- 29 April 2018. The selection policy and forms will be available in the new year and the cut off date will be 18 March.
For Northern PARA riders who will have completed two regional training days (one can be unmounted) we will be holding a Team Training day with Angela Weiss UKCC 3 and your regional PARA rep Gillian Brown on Sunday 18 March. This will give you your final training criteria if you need it, but more importantly will be a team building event for those coming forward to represent Northern Region and will be subsidised. Introducing Sian Barton now covering the North of England for Sue Carson Saddles.

Sian is based just outside of Harrogate, North Yorkshire and has over 20 years of experience with horses.

Sian has worked for many professionals including Diane Smeaton, with whom she trained with regularly, and Harry Meade, where she was lucky enough to work alongside super groom Karen Hughes. This gave Sian the knowledge to understand the requirements of happy hackers to 4* event riders.

Sian has a passion for eventing and retrained her ex racehorse Kama Night to 1* level. She now regularly events Dupicor, owned by Amanda Riley, at novice level with the aim of stepping up to intermediate in the near future.
